It amazes me how quickly Facebook has swept the Nation. It is now one of the most popular social networking devices ever. It has taken it a while, but it has grown from a small network for Ivy League students to one of the most popular websites in the world. Let’s take a look at Facebook’s short history. It started when Mark Zuckerburg and a couple of his college roomates and computer-science classmates decided they wanted their fellow Harvard students to be able to keep in touch. It was then expanded to include other Ivy league students as well as Stanford students. After that it was made to include all universitiy students, then high-school students, then anyone over the age of thirteen. For more indepth history of Facebook click here.
Facebook is very revelant in today’s pop-culture. You can’t find a kid around who doesn’t have a facebook or at least know what Facebook is. You can find references to facebook throughout advertising (Apple, Verizon Wireless, Netbook, etc.). It is also often referred ro in TV Shows and Movies (30′s Rock, The Office, Parks and Recreation, so-on&so-on). It has become one of the most powerful advertising ploys now to market your product simaltaniously with facebook, or a facebook application. It only leaves the question will it follow the Trend of Myspace, IMing, and other Networking devices and become a no longer relevant topic, or will it thrive like e-mail, online news, and blogging? Only time will tell.
P.S.- If you don’t have a facebook account you can sign up for one here.
